Role

Design Lead

We demonstrated a prototype for business owners that addressed all of the key needs we heard from business customers to demonstrate how we could scale there.

Project Goal

As part of a major redesign of ANZ’s mobile app, I led the research and design for a new business banking experience that addressed the unique financial challenges of small businesses. Our objective was to develop powerful money management tools that could enhance customers’ financial wellbeing and streamline daily operations.

Challenge

To design a truly valuable experience, we needed to rethink digital banking around the specific needs of small business customers. This required testing a wide range of ideas with customers to identify solutions that would resonate with them while aligning with the bank’s overall strategy.

Concept testing many different ideas with customers following deep research to move towards a more holistic understanding of needs.

Approach

I led a team of six designers as we conducted exploratory research, revealing that managing cash flow, reducing administrative tasks, and increasing financial knowledge were top priorities for small business owners. From these insights, we designed innovative features, including a cashflow management system that allowed customers to create separate “buckets” without needing additional accounts, digital receipt storage, and mobile EFTPOS functionality.

Working with Marketing to ensure that we could pull together a prototype and value proposition that was aligned with customer needs and ANZ' strategy.

Part of the foundational research we carried out into business owners to understand a maturity model and how their networks change over time.

Outcome

By bringing these solutions to life, we developed a new proposition tailored for small business customers and influenced ANZ’s long-term strategy for supporting small businesses.
