Our final output which prioritised search effectiveness and tagging to create a system that would be less likely to degrade over time than one which required fastidious organisation across a huge organisation like ANZ.

Project Goal

To re-design ANZ’s intranet to improve content discoverability and reduce content management overhead, creating a streamlined, user-friendly platform for employees worldwide. My role was focused on understanding the problem and helping to design a more scalable architecture for the intranet.

Challenge

ANZ’s existing intranet was outdated and complex, making it challenging for employees to locate the information they needed quickly. This led to inefficiencies and frustration across the organization, highlighting the need for a simplified and intuitive information architecture.

Workshops with a diverse group of ANZ staff to understand how different domains were using the intranet.

Approach

Leading the research and design alongside a content design team, I conducted interviews with ANZ employees across global locations to understand their information search habits and requirements. By mapping their needs and behaviors, we identified key opportunities to restructure the intranet around content objects. We introduced connected, themed, and tagged content to prioritize search effectiveness and reduce the need for intensive content governance, ensuring a sustainable and scalable solution.

A domain model identifying the key concepts, objects and relationships within the intranet. We used this to create an information structure that could be more easily and logically connected.

A system map built from our research showing where some of the main pinch points were leading us to prioritise seach effectiveness and tagging which would reduce the need for strict content governance.

Outcome

The redesigned intranet significantly improved content discoverability for employees, allowing them to access relevant information more efficiently. This new structure also minimized content management efforts, reducing long-term maintenance and creating a more intuitive, user-focused platform for ANZ’s global workforce.
